Send a traveler the length and breadth of the Emerald Isle with a recorder, documenting the best Irish and Celtic traditional music she can find. At the end of her quest, ask her to play back only the thrilling highlights, and that’s precisely what this program offers. Those who intimately know this musical tradition will recognize these performers as luminaries. Those who aren’t yet obsessed—well, perhaps the media can get their fire stoked: “His music speaks a language as accustomed to reaching back as it is to looking forward, fingering its history with the same loving care that it does the present” (Gerry O’Connor); “exceptional music, remarkable musician” (Emer Mayock); “Irish fiddling as good as it gets” (Frankie Gavin); “one of the most extraordinary musical talents this country has ever produced” (Cora Venus Lunny); and “the ultimate live percussionist”—“a cheeky delight” (Robert Harris).

Such works as Aughrim Suite, Deirdre of the Sorrows, and Inishlacken will feature traditional fiddle and banjo, Irish flute, Uilleann pipes, and bodhran, as well as soprano Regina Nathan’s voice—by turns plaintive and mischievous, soaring and rooted in the sod of her native hills—with original orchestral arrangements by Irish composers.
