Hugo Wolf Quartett Close your eyes for a moment. The kaffeehaus overwhelms your senses. You savor your sachertorte; your partner takes a mouthful of apfelstrudel. Music is in the air. Ahh, Vienna! No other city in the world has been home to so many famous composers. And as a city that loves its musicians, it’s no surprise that Vienna today is abuzz with talk of the Hugo Wolf Quartett. Join these artists for an evening in Vienna—with the music of Haydn and Berg building to Schubert’s sublime “Death and the Maiden.” Truly an evening worthy of Vienna’s Musikverein—and Krannert Center’s Great Hall! These four superbly matched, prodigiously talented, and provocatively thoughtful musicians dig in to the very core of the music they perform. Taking their name from composer Hugo Wolf (1860-1903), in recognition of his pivotal position between the great Viennese music tradition and its journey into the modern period, the quartet performs similarly pivotal repertoire, with a sharp-edged immediacy that reveals unsuspected depths in the works they present. Communicating with authority and unbridled intensity, by turns “tender, ardent, touching, muscular,” they play with impassioned urgency conjoined with an unerring commitment to the ideal value of every note.
