Chelsea Tipton II, conductor With Elena Urioste, Violin soloist.
The Sphinx Organization has a powerful vision: “a world in which classical music reflects cultural diversity and plays a role in the everyday lives of youth.” Toward that end it holds an annual competition for black and Latino / Latina students residing in the US, offering these classical string players a chance to perform before an internationally renowned panel of judges.
Each member of the Harlem Quartet is a first-place laureate of the Sphinx Competition. Within a month of its acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in the fall of 2006, the quartet owned the stage at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. This season will see its first concert at the Library of Congress, performing Schubert with the New York Philharmonic’s principal cellist, Carter Brey, on Stradivari instruments from the library’s collection. The chamber orchestra is also composed of top Sphinx Competition alumni. The New York Times proclaimed its 2004 Carnegie Hall debut “first-rate in every way,” noting that the ensemble “produced a more beautiful, precise and carefully shaped sound than some fully professional orchestras that come through Carnegie Hall in the course of the year.”
As guest conductor, Chelsea Tipton II has taken the podium before the Cleveland, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Detroit, and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras and has led the Boston Pops and the New York Philharmonic as well.
Prelude at 6:30pm- An informal talk with the artists about the evening's program.
