Located in historic downtown Urbana, the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization which uses media as a tool for promoting social justice. The IMC is a community and arts center which houses a radio station, stage, library, production studios, art studios and meeting spaces. The IMC uses these facilities to foster the creation of art to give a voice to the underrepresented in Champaign County. It also provides the public with access to computer, free wireless connectivity and a library.

WRFU, a public access community radio station is operated from the IMC. It provides a mix of music and talk, which focuses on public affairs issues and the arts. The station holds meeting open to the public and programming for the station is chose by their members. WRFU messages are meant to empower the public and encourage people to become the media.

The IMC also helps the community with its Books to Prisoners program and The Bike Project. Books to Prisoners sends free books to Illinois inmates and operates lending libraries in two county jails. The Bike Project offers space and classes to fix your bike or build one from their collection of unused parts.

The IMC is organized into working groups that are each responsible for different areas of the center’s operations. Some examples of working groups include artists, finance, production and shows. All working groups accept new members and meeting are open to the public. Other ways to volunteer and get involved with the IMC are to become a member or attend events and open hours.
