Instantly recognizable in their white-belted red coats and black bearskin hats as they accompany the Mounting of the Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace, the members of the Band of the Irish Guards are enthusiastically celebrated for their morale boosting on deployments to active military zones. Based in London and originating in 1900 at the behest of Queen Victoria, The Band of the Irish Guards has a primary duty is to protect the members of the monarchy, perform for ceremonial occasions, and support the Army Medical Services during mobilization, yet it has traveled to North and South American, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Hong Kong, and even the Imperial Palace in Japan with its rousing patriotic melodies and the sharp staccato of its drums. In addition to its full calendar of live performances, the band has been heard most notably in the film The Ipcress File starring Michael Caine and most widely for Queen Elizabeth’s 80th birthday celebration.
The Royal Regiment of Scotland has a musical legacy stretching back to the days of Mozart. Now the sole Scottish band in the British forces, this ensemble epitomizes the traditional military band experience, as the musicians march resplendent in their kilts, bonnets, sporrans, and doublets with plenty of pomp and circumstance. The lilting, haunting pipes will play ancient tunes, and then the drums and dancers will join in for stirring flings, traditional folk tunes, and snappy marches.
