Illinois Shakespeare Festival presents Scapin by Bill Irwin and Mark O'Donnell, adapted from Jean Baptiste Moliere, and directed by Karen Kessler. With his father out of town, the impulsive young Octave falls madly in love with the impoverished Hyacinthe--a woman of mysterius background. When his father suddenly returns and is determined to marry Octave to the foreign-born (and unknown) daughter of Geronte, Octave turns in desperation to Scapin-a clever and mischievous servant. Scapin pulls every trick in the book, makes up wild tales, cheats the father out of money, and finally stuffs him in a sack to recieve a beating from an imaginary mob. Of course, in the end, the young, beautiful, and mysterious Hyacinthe turns out to be Geronte's daughter and all ends well as Scapin pulls one more scam to earn everyone's forgiveness. The Illinois Shakespeare Festival exemplifies a long-established tradition of professional theatre devoted to performing the plays of William Shakespeare. Every summer, a collection of theatre professionals and interns unite in Bloomington-Normal, IL, to create a dynamic environment, one dedicated not only to education but also the enthusiastic creation of performing art. In 1978, the Festival was founded as a partnership between the Illinois State University School of Theatre and the College of Fine Arts; that partnership continues today. The School of Theatre provides budget support, personnel, and facilities; the College of Fine Arts provides budget support, specifically for administrative salaries, as well as facility support.
