Reception: July 9, 6-8 p.m., in the Gallery Lounge, with artist’s gallery talk at 7pm and music by Jordan Kaye.
Illinois artist Michael Hoag brings us complex portraits in a colorful summer exhibit, opening Monday, June 29 at the Parkland Art Gallery. A reception, featuring a gallery talk with Hoag and music by Jordan Kaye, will be held on Thursday, July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery lounge. The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, August 11; both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
Hoag’s art pieces for this show combine explosive symmetrical lines of intense color with an organic softer portrait floating on the surface of the canvas. The jumbled lines of the first layer add a chaotic edge to the image, while the portrait adds an organic note to the abstract lines and colors. This tension infuses the imagery with a complexity that blurs our selective perception and represents the push and pull between order and chaos that Hoag seeks to embed within his portraiture.
Summer hours: Monday - Thursday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. and 6–8 p.m.
Programs at the Parkland Art Gallery are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Parkland is a section 504/ADA-compliant institution. For accommodation(s), call (217) 351-2505.
