Hathaways is a brother-sister duo from tiny Rossville, IL. Elder sibling Kate has been writing and performing since 2001, but after prodigiously-talented James revealed his ability to perfectly perform his sister's compositions, the two began to collaborate in earnest in 2006. Since James had already developed into an accomplished guitar player, Kate was freed to incorporate another passion, the charango, into their instrumentation. Under the tutelage of mentor Tom Turino, Kate had learned to play this small, ten-stringed folk instrument of the Peruvian Andes while studying ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois. Between the unique and beautiful texture of the charango, James' skillful acoustic guitar work, and the interplay of rich male-female vocal harmonies, Hathaways have created a sound unlike any other act in modern folk or pop music.
Dottie and the 'Rail is a band in Champaign-Urbana. They play traditional toe-tappin, two-steppin country songs described as, "Hard Drinkin', Old School Honky Tonkin'."
Dottie & the Rail band members:
The Duke of Uke and his Novelty Orchestra has been wowing audiences all around town with their Dada-ist mix of ukulele swing and brassy funk. They play a combination of powerpop, psychedelic, and folk rock.
