Whether you discover it while walking on a sunny afternoon, or you’re seeking a cozy space full of inspiration and aesthetic delight on a rainy day, Krannert Art Museum’s various galleries are always hung with diverse works of art from its permanent collection, as well as unique works from traveling exhibits from time to time.
The Krannert Art Museum is connected to the Art and Design Building by the Link Gallery. This gallery is usually used to display students’ works of art. Plenty of natural light pours in from the floor to ceiling glass panels that “link” the Art and Design Building to the museum. The gallery, displaying the works of budding artists, is a great transition to the museum, which exhibits the work of masters.
Upon entering the museum, a self-check coatroom is available to patrons. Although admission to the museum is free, a $3 donation is suggested.
The Palette Café is housed within the museum. It is the perfect place for a snack before or after indulging in Krannert’s individual galleries. The café is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on weekends.
On the lower level of the museum are the Ancient Gallery and the Decorative Arts Gallery. The Ancient Gallery houses artifacts from several ancient civilizations, including Greece and Rome. The Decorative Arts Gallery displays items including china plates, tea sets and other domestic, decorative pieces from all over the world.
Upstairs on the main level of the museum are the Trees Gallery and the Bow Gallery, both of which host a variety of classical pieces from all over Europe.
The Bow Gallery leads patrons down the hall to the Kinkead Pavilion. A grand space, constructed mostly of glass, it houses sculptures and figurines.
Traveling exhibits and other non-permanent exhibits are typically displayed on the main level in the Rosann Noel Gelvin Gallery. The spacious gallery allows patrons plenty of space to size up their favorite pieces.
Located at 500 East Peabody Drive in Champaign, Krannert Art Museum is a jewel everyone should take the time to discover for himself. The plethora and diversity of items from Krannert’s permanent collection never ceases to amaze, and the traveling exhibits that visit the museum are unique opportunities to be exposed to art from all over the world.
