Not making the trip home this year for Thanksgiving? Or maybe your Thanksgiving is here in Champaign? If you answered “yes” to either of those two questions, then I have a great way for you to spend the night before Thanksgiving.
Champaign’s own 90s Daughter will be performing at Cowboy Monkey on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 9 p.m.
90s Daughter is the brain child of two Champaign-Urbana rockers Tom Grassman (guitar) and Guido Esteves (bass). Don’t be surprised if these two veteran rockers look familiar to you on stage. Both have been part of such successful Champaign bands like the Brat Pack and Live Band Karaoke.
I’ve been hanging around the Champaign-Urbana music scene for awhile now, and I can easily say these two are one of the best guitar-bass combos that I have seen.
Oh, and did I mention that both Grassman and Esteves are part of the Chicago Blackhawks house band, and you can see these two performing at every Blackhawks home game?! Yeah, these guys don’t suck.
Take those two rockers, combine them with Jason Barham on drums, add a gem of a singer, Amy “Jen X” Mitchell, and you get one crazy night of ‘90s hits.
I have personally been to a 90s Daughter show before at Cowboy Monkey and knew the show would be entertaining. However, I didn’t realize they would be that good.
Mitchell, who is by all rights a ‘90s child herself, is so powerful on vocals that it did not matter if she was singing a song originally sung by a male or female. Every time she stepped up to the mic I bought whatever song from the ‘90s she was selling me.
And I wasn’t the only one. Cowboy Monkey was packed – and I see no reason to think that on Nov. 23 it will be anything but just that.
I am sure you are convinced by now to go to this show but just in case you aren’t, let me break it down for you why you have no excuses.
1. It’s ’90s music, man!
I am talking about a decade that brought us grunge rock and angry chick music. Also tell me you aren’t going to sing along when they hit you with Britney Spears, Weezer or Chumbawamba? Don’t lie to me.
2. The next day is Thanksgiving.
You know what that means? No classes, no work (for most), tons and tons of food and football. Only thing you need to worry about is waking up in time so you don’t have to sit at the kids’ table again this year. Thanks mom.
3. Everyone will be out!
For most, the day before Thanksgiving is the night to go out because everyone also has the next day off.
So, on Wednesday, Nov. 23, head on over to Cowboy Monkey in downtown Champaign and let 90s Daughter kick off your Thanksgiving break right. The cost is only $5, and the doors open at 9 p.m.
