DETROIT ROCK CITY! Although a far cry from the sounds of "The Nuge" that you may hear coming out of your garage every now and again, The White Stripes still carry on the musical tradition of Iggy and the Stooges and Motown with their mix of indie and garage rock and blues. The White Stripes were formed in 1997 by Jack White on guitar and vocals and then wife, Meg White on drums and backup vocals. Although the marriage broke up in 2000, the band did not. In 1999, they released their eponymous first album. Their raw sound is often referred to as lo-fi but differs greatly from bands of the same genre from the 1990s and early 2000s. They first began touring with Pavement and Sleater-Kinney, giants of the indie rock scene. From that point on, The White Stripes have left a lasting impact on the rock and roll of the last ten years. Releasing five albums since their first, 2007's Icky Thump hit #2 on the U.S. charts and took the top spot in the U.K. In addition to pervading the rock music scene of today, The White Stripes have also snuck their way in to popular culture as well. From dueling with Jack Black in Celebrity Deathmatch to being animated by Matt Groening for The Simpsons, The White Stripes have found themselves in the minds of more than just your average hipster. Although The White Stripes had planned an extensive U.S. and U.K. tour supporting Icky Thump, because of health issues from Meg White, all of the dates have been canceled.
