The Smiths are one of the most influential alternative rock acts in the last 25 years. Based around songwriters Morrissey and Johnny Marr, The Smiths released four albums from 1984 to their breakup in 1987. The combination of Morrissey's music and Johnny Marr's guitar work has influenced countless bands from many genres. Tension between Morrissey and Marr eventually led to their breakup shortly before their fourth full length, "Strangeways, Here We Come", was released in 1987. Both immediately pursued their own solo careers and have had great success. There have been many rumors of reunion tours, but both refuse to perform with each other, no matter what the price.
