The National is an indie rock band that originally formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1999. They have since relocated to Brooklyn, NY. The National consists of two pairs of brothers and their friend: Scott and Bryan Devendorf, guitar and drums, Aaron and Bryce Dessner, bass and guitar and lead singer, Matt Berninger. The National sets itself apart from other indie bands because of Berninger's unique baritone. Their eponymous first album was released on the Dessner brothers' label, Brassland Records in 2001. In 2002, another album was released on the same label. In 2005, however, the band moved to Beggars Banquet Records. In the same year, their third studio album, Alligator, was released to critical acclaim. In 2007, their newest album to date, The Boxer was released to more critical accolades. Their new album features help by fellow indie artist Sufjan Stevens.
