Sonic Youth is an American rock group formed in 1981 in New York City. The core group, comprised of Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon, and Steve Shelley, has been together since 1985. They were a major part of New York's "No Wave" scene in the early 1980s. Sonic Youth's unique sound came from their combination of pop song structures and experimental guitar sounds. They signed to SST Records in 1986 and released "EVOL" to much critical acclaim. Their most influential album came by the way of 1988's "Daydream Nation", which was noted by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the greatest albums of the decade. Their latest release, 2006's "Rather Ripped", was named Rolling Stone's #3 album of the year, showing the band's ability to continue to keep their sound fresh after 25 years.
