Quite possibly Chicago's greatest contribution to Alternative Music, the Smashing Pumpkins have a remarkable history with many ups and downs. Theband's original lineup was made up with Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlain, James Iha, and D'arcy Wretzky. They broke out in 1993 with their albumSiamese Dream, which included the hit songs"Today," "Cherub Rock," and"Disarm." 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness established the band asone of the most important groups of the decade and it is still seen by many critics as being one of the best albums ever produced. In the albums to follow, the band branched out even more by incorporating synthesized sounds andother electronic effects into their music. The Smashing Pumpkins disbanded in 2000 and the members became involved in separate projects. In 2006, Billy Corgan announced that the band would be reforming, touring, and producing a new record- 2007's Zeitgeist. Despite only two of the original members being in the reformed Smashing Pumpkins, the band has been welcomed back by sold out crowds all over the world.
