Santi White, or Santogold, signed for her solo career while she was still the lead singer of Philadelphia based punk-rock band, Stiffed, who released two albums, Sex Sells and Burned Again. White then collaborated with a fellow member of Stiffed, John Hill, to help produce her first solo album, Santogold, released in April 2008.
The album contained two singles, “Creator” and “L.E.S. Artistes,” which were well received by both the press and audiences alike. The new-wave pop song, “L.E.S. Artistes” was written by White after she moved to New York in which she criticizes the Lower East Side (L.E.S.) hipsters.
The entirety of White’s first album illustrates the energetic genre she belongs to by mixing ska pop with a punk-like alternative rock making for a flexible range of audiences. In the summer of 2008, Santogold went on tour with Coldplay debuting their album, Viva La Vida.
The band name was renamed "Santigold" in February of 2009 after a jeweler named Santo Gold threatened to take legal action against White.
