Of Montreal is an indie pop band that was part of the second wave of Elephant Six bands in the 1990s. They formed in 1997 in Athens, GA. The band gained its name from the town of origin of one of lead singer Kevin Barnes' ex-girlfriend's. Besides Barnes, of Montreal is bassist Bryan Helium(nee Poole), drummer Jamie Huggins, keyboardist Dottie Alexander and guitarist Davey Pierce. The band has gone through several lineup changes in its ten year existence. Of Montreal's first full length, Cherry Peel, was released on Bar/None Records in 1997. Their next four albums were released on Kindercore Records. In 2004, of Montreal switched over to Champaign's own Polyvinyl Records. Their most recent release, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? charted at #72 on the U.S. charts. The most recent efforts by of Montreal have been markedly different from their earlier releases because of an increasing solo effort by frontman Barnes. Of Montreal has recently made a cultural impact through the use of their song in Outback commercials and in a compilation for popular teen drama, The O.C. Of Montreal is known for their interesting live show and they continue to tour, often coming to the area.
