Neutral Milk Hotel's early days consisted of playing noise rock in a local laudromat. Since their beginnings in 1990, after a transitional period with singles, the band recorded their 1996 album "On Avry Island. " Their intimate, quirky style shines through in their 1998 sophomore album "In an Aero plane Over the Sea," whose single with the same name had immense success in the indie scene. Conceptually based on the Diary of Anne Frank, the album contains innovative instrumentals and dreamlike lyrics. The success of the album took a toll on the band, especially front man Jeff Magnum, who abruptly put the band on hiatus, declining to perform any more shows. The fate of the band is currently unknown and future releases are unlikely.
