Originally known as just The Management, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden started playing music together in college. After they graduated in 2005, Goldwasser and VanWyngarden began touring under the name of MGMT as the opening band for indie rock band, Of Montreal. In the same year, MGMT released their first EP, Time to Pretend, with songs “Kids” and “Time to Pretend” they later re-mastered for their first full length album, Oracular Spectacular, in 2007-2008. The single “Time to Pretend” has been performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, featured on the soundtrack “21,” and has hit US and UK music charts.
MGMT has opened as a five-piece set (including Matthew Asti on bass, James Richardson on drums and Hank Sullivant on guitar) for Of Montreal, again, in their 2007 North American tour. In 2008, MGMT filled slots in Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Glastonbury music festivals with a North American Tour scheduled for fall.
