While their name references a Havana meeting place for Cuban revolutionaries, Maximo Park formed in the English town of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2000. Without artistic focus and set instrumental roles in the group, they were on the brink of breakup in 2001 until drummer Tom English discovered now-front man Paul Smith singing Stevie Wonder in a pub. Three years later, the band released a vinyl of their tracks "The Coast is Always Changing/The Night I Lost My Head." The vinyl landed in the hands of the dance-electronic label Warp Records, who signed the band that year. In 2005, they quickly rose to indie fame for their catchy punk sound in their debut album, "A Certain Tiger." After a busy touring schedule, their sophomore album "Our Earthly Pleasures" dropped in April 2007.
