British group The Jesus and Mary Chain were not chart toppers, but their influence is widespread. The group first formed in 1984, with core members and brothers William and Jim Reid. Early success came from their debut single, "Upside Down," which brought success in the United Kingdom. Their sets were often noisy, confrontational and often led to audience rioting. The band maintained a steady output through the 80's then took a break returning with another string of albums in the '90's. In 1998 they released their most recent effort, "Munki," but officially disbanded in 1999 after William Reid left the group on while on tour.
