Gogol Bordello is the creation of Ukrainian Eugene Hütz who immigrated to the U.S. in 1993 after living in several places throughout Eastern Europe. Originally displaced by the melt down at Chernobyl in 1986, Hütz became enamored with gypsy music while in Europe, and quickly formed a band once he reached the U.S. The band started off playing traditional gypsy anthems at Russian weddings, but they soon found that the traditional music was too slow for their liking and began adding touches of punk and speeding it up. Voi-La Intruder was released in 2003, and the band has enjoyed touring success in both the U.S. and Eastern Europe.
