Elliot Smith began in Portland recording writing and recording his first four-track songs at the age of 14. In 1997 he broke onto the mainstream with his song "Miss Misery," which was featured in the film "Good Will Hunting." Smith is known for his heartbreaking songs, often accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and signature double-tracked vocals. Smith released two major label albums, "XO" and "Figure 8," during his lifetime. He was working on his next album, "From a Basement on a Hill," when he was found dead in 2003. The cause of his death was never conclusively found. In 2007 a collection of his unreleased work, titled "New Moon," was released to critical acclaim.
