Death From Above 1979 is an indie/synth rock band based in Toronto which formed in 2001 when bass/synth player Jesse F. Keeler and vocalist/drummer Sebastian Grainger met at a Sonic Youth concert. They refused to get a guitarist for the band, instead relying on the heavy bass, synth and drums alone to create their signature brand of dance-punk and self characterized "wall of noise." They had released two EPs with relative success, but it wasn't until their first and only LP, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine in 2004 that they made a big impact on the music scene with 175,000 records having been sold worldwide and the album going gold in their native Canada, along with the video for "Romantic Rights" winning a VideoFACT award at the MuchMusic Video Awards in 2005. After the massive popularity in the band took root, the duo actually decided to call it quits in 2006 as a message by Keeler on their official site. He explains that the two had grown apart as musicians and as people since the formation of the band, and that he had accomplished everything he had wanted to and more with this project, thanking his fans in the end.
