Chan Marshall is the mastermind behind Cat Power. Born and raised in the South with a father who was a pianist, she later moved to New York after she dropped out of high school. Under the name "Cat Power," she started booking shows and drawing crowds for her minimalist style, sparse guitar, and piano, accompanied by ethereal vocals. After meeting Sonic Youth's drummer Steve Shelley and Two Dollar Guitar's Tim Foljahn, a record was released in 1995 entitled "Dear Sir." From then on records followed and in 2006 her biggest release came with "The Greatest." Recorded in Memphis, Tenn., it features a lusher, more polished sound as well as cameos by legendary soul players.
