Blur, which was started in the UK in 1989, has been described as the one of the defining bands of the Britpop movement of the 90s. Initially the band had a shoegazer sound to it, however this did not last very long as they went through a stylistic change in the mid 90s with the release of Modern Life Is Rubbish, helping to popularize Britpop and vaulting them into popularity in the UK, this being helped by the rivalry between them and Oasis. By the later mid-90s, with the release of their fifth album Blur, they had gone through yet another stylistic change, adopting a more lo-fi sound influenced by American bands such as Pavement and R.E.M. and finding huge success with their single, "Song 2." Their final release was in 2003 with their album Think Tank, a year after founding member Graham Coxon left the band.
