Bad Religion was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1980, by high school friends Greg Gaffin, Jay Bentley, Jay Ziskrout, and Brett Gurewitz. The band created their own label, Epitaph to release their self-titled debut EP in 1981. The band went on a hiatus from 1984 until 1987, and has remained together ever since, releasing New Maps of Hell in 2007. Bad religion has held onto their core fan base for over two decades and remained a relevant underground punk band by consistently changing their music through fusion with other styles such as psychedelic and heavy metal, and by keeping their lyrics as passionate as on their the day they formed.
