Wowee Zowee: Thoughts on a possible Pavement reunion?
3:00 am Mar 2 - by Ashley Albrecht – buzz Assistant Music Editor
According to a recent Pitchfork posting, a Pavement “reunion” of sorts took place a few weeks back, at the Nashville wedding reception of Silver Jews/Pavement percussionist Bob Nastanovich. Although the band members braved the stage for a “jamfest” of sorts, not a single Pavement song was played. Perhaps Malkmus has smartened up after his melodramatic departure (handcuffed microphone, anyone?) from the group and nine-year musical foray with “the Jicks” (Joanna Bolme, Mike Clark, Janet Weiss).
Is a premeditated, legitimate Pavement reunion in order for all its former members? Would a venue such as the Coachella Music Festival be an option? I believe such a reunion would be most artistically beneficial for Mr. Malkmus. Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks’ latest release, last spring’s Real Emotional Trash, epitomized the ex-frontman’s penchant for self-indulgent excess. It simply didn't deliver.
Is a reunion necessary to get Malkmus’ creative juices flowing properly again? I think so.
