As the semester comes to a close, there are projects, papers and finals to worry about, but 11 seniors have something else on their mind: their final showcase for Dance at Illinois.

This weekend will feature two shows in the Dance Rehearsal Room on level 2 of the Krannert Center for Performing Arts.

The shows are the second and third installments of “TruthGame,” which focuses on topics of age, relationships and physicality.

The idea of “TruthGame” came from a game that the seniors play on Facebook. The dancers post a word and then something honest, “almost to the point of over-sharing,” said Alyssa Schoeneman, a UIUC senior dancer.

“We see our theses and solos as extensions of ourselves,” she said. “In other words, the dances we are presenting are our truths, and we’re not making any excuses for them.”

Elise Moore, another performer, said that the seniors have been working on their pieces since the fall.

Each senior will perform a solo choreographed by a UIUC faculty member, peer or alumni of her choosing in addition to their own choreographed group piece.

Show A will feature the talents of Stephanie Azzaretto, Kaitlin Lang, Schoeneman and Kristen Walterman, while show B will feature Courtney Bradley, Nichole Johnson, Moore and Julia Radomyski.

“The BFA Thesis Concerts are among the most highly attended concerts of the Dance at Illinois season,” a press release said.

A wide variety of subjects will be explored, from relationships to grapevines to neurons, while also experimenting with movement, suspension, technique and energy.

Most of the dances will be based in modern, but other genres will be presented as well, such as Moore’s Broadway jazz solo.

“The show is very strong overall, and I think the audience will walk away from the performance feeling good,” said Schoeneman. “I have 13 people coming to the show from out-of-town, and it means so much to me that they support me in my artistic endeavors.”

She said to expect a variety of great dancing by her incredibly talented peers.

While the April 30 and May 1 shows are free, donations will be accepted and will go towards the Dance Rehearsal Room funds. The shows are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
