Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Dec. 03, 2007 - by Paul Prikazsky – Buzz Writer
Comic wunderkind Judd Apatow unleashes his Jewish, pop-culture infused humor on skewering biopics that celebrate the meteoric rise and fall of musical legends. Normally I’d say parody material is the haven for hackneyed jokes and satire so easy Tara Reid could get it. But then again, it’s the guy who brought us The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. And if the new red-band trailer is any indication, Apatow has scored again.
Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly) is the folksy yokel with a passion for the blues and strummin’ on his gee-tar. Sort of an amalgamation of Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, Walk Hard mocks the born in poverty, rise to power, descent into drugs and women, and subsequent redemption that we’ve seen a thousand times before. Only with Cox crooning lyrics like “in my dreams you’re blowing me… some kisses,” it’s sure to be hilarious.
Cox is a musical chameleon of sorts, running the artistic gamut from rock ‘n roll, free-wheeling hippie activism, producing tycoon and even embarking on an LSD-induced voyage to India with the Beatles. All the while Reilly brings such an “aw, shucks” attitude to the absurd dialogue that you can’t help but find lines like “all you want to do is eat fruit and touch yourself. Well, fuck you man!” He says that to a chimp by the way.
And like any good Apatow film, Walk Hard’s strength won’t only be in its barrage of jokes, but its solid cast. Tim Meadows, Kristen Wiig and everyone’s favorite receptionist from The Office, Jenna Fisher round out the players. As always, the best stuff is saved for the final cut, which, based on the hysterical trailer will surely be worth the ten bucks.
