Cameron Diaz’s rise to superstardom over the years since she first co-starred with Jim Carrey in The Mask has been somewhat of a minor miracle. With minimal comedic talent and skill, a cute petite shape and a dazzling smile, she now commands one of the highest salaries of any female lead. But with her last two films I am convinced she has become a rather appealing romantic comic leading lady in the tradition of some of Hollywood’s best. Like her previous role in the charming Nancy Meyers film Holiday, as Joy McNally, a high maintenance New York commodities trader, she makes What Happens in Vegas… a completely predictable, obnoxiously cute, yet oddly likeable, romantic comedy that should be much worse than you’d expect.
Ashton Kutcher, another handsome star with a charming smile, co-stars as Jack Fuller. Fuller is sort of a poor man’s Vince Vaughn crossed with a bit of a young George Clooney. When Fuller gets fired from his father’s cabinet and furniture factory, he and his best pal, Hater, head off to Vegas to forget their troubles. At the same time , Joy gets dumped by her longtime boyfriend just when she thought he was ready for commitment. So she and her best friend Tipper head to Vegas with the same idea.
Written by Dana “The Wedding Guest” Fox, the film features the most tried and true, worn out formula of two absolute opposites who initially can’t stand each other, but ultimately find themselves needing the other. Like clockwork, Jack and Joy’s paths meet; they party the night away and wake up in their hotel bed married. Once somber and ready to get their morning after annulment, they hit a $3 million jackpot. He claims it’s all his and she disagrees. In court, taking a page from the classic Cary Grant film The Awful Truth, a conservative family values judge (Dennis Miller) sentences them to six months of continued “court supervised” matrimony before anything will be done with the money.
Despite many gimmicky scenes of unhappily married bliss, from bathroom etiquette lessons, cleaning up personal messes, to various family and office get togethers Jack and Joy slowly and predictably grow fond of each other. Director Tom Vaughn keeps the film’s pace lively and never dull and his good supporting cast, including Rob Corddry, Dennis Farina, Queen Latifah and Treat Williams, make What Happens in Vegas…a surprisingly entertaining film.
