Titles of films that contain a clever play on words are often too cute for their own good. This is just the case with Paul Weiland’s new romantic comedy Made of Honor, which stars television heartthrob Patrick Dempsey. Made of Honor is a mildly pleasant amalgamation of two parts My Best Friend’s Wedding, one part When Harry Met Sally, and a faint bit of the Cary Grant classic The Philadelphia Story.

Based on a story by Adam Sztykiel, composed with two other screenwriters, Made of Honor is about a playboy, Tom (Dempsey) and his platonic girlfriend, Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), who have maintained a ten year relationship as ‘best friends’ despite his many conquests and one-night stands. When Hannah gets an opportunity to go to Scotland for six weeks on an art restoration project, poor Tommie doesn’t know how he’ll survive without his bosom buddy. When she returns from Scotland with a Highland prince named Colin and announces they’ll be married, Tommie is crushed. The message here is: causal sex is great fun, but true friendship and real love is what floats your boat.

Hannah still has a big heart, and as she must plan for a quick wedding to this lad of royal Scot blood, she offers Tom the role of “male” maid of honor in her bridal entourage. Feminizing macho men has usually been sure fire chemistry for silly romantic comedy, especially with an established hunk like Dempsey (note any lame George Clooney or Tom Selleck film of the past twenty years). But somehow the romantic blend isn’t all that successful here. While Dempsey pulls his weight as the “green with jealousy” guy, Monaghan’s performance and character are too one dimensionally boring. Formulaic scenes of shopping for wedding apparel and gifts, a shower and bachelorette party, and pre-wedding dinner in a Scottish castle all come off very lame.

Made of Honor is the type of film young women might find very appealing and guys will be dragged to, but they’ll do it to show they are ‘friends’.
