Drag Me To Hell

I really want to see Drag Me to Hell. Sam Raimi has proven that he’s got the chops to deliver a good old-fashioned piece of horror-comedy, and hopefully this one’s it. The buzz surrounding the film is great, and the trailer is fantastic. The sad thing is that I won’t be shocked if the movie is bad. It’s so hard to find a good horror film these days, especially if you’ve seen nearly everything out there like I have. I love horror movies, and I still go to them almost religiously, only to be disappointed time after time.

There have only been a few horror movies which have scared me over the past several years. First and foremost, The Ring turned me into a whimpering five-year-old girl while sitting in the movie theater watching it. At one point, I looked down the seating row at all of my friends, and everyone was either covering their eyes, plugging their ears, or latching onto the person sitting next to them. When the movie ended I felt as though I had been on a rollercoaster.

The remake of The Hills Have Eyes also scared the heck out of me, but for different reasons than The Ring. Whereas The Ring was atmospheric and moody in its terror and relied on many images being left to the imagination, The Hills Have Eyes was brutal and in-your-face with its horrendous violence. I went to this one with three girls, and they all openly wept at an intense scene in the film. During that same scene I actually found myself shaking in fear at what I was watching. I saw this movie four times at the theater because I found it so powerful, which certainly makes me a creep.

There is also a re-make of A Nightmare on Elm Street in the works. I have high hopes for this one, as Jackie Earle Haley has been cast as Freddy Krueger. Haley is absolutely perfect for the role, so that’s a plus for the film right away. Freddy Krueger has always been my favorite horror slasher. Well…not as a kid, as I could not even venture into the horror film aisle at the video store because I was too scared to even catch a glimpse of Freddy. I saw his image once, and had to sleep with my parents for a week. I would have kept up the bed-sharing, but they eventually kicked me out.

To sum everything up, I love horror movies, but recently I feel as though they don’t love me back. Please don’t let me down, Drag Me to Hell.

This doesn't look like a scary scary movie but a goofy scary movie. At least that's the impression the TV trailers give me. Are you disappointed at horror movies that fail to scare, or horror movies that are just plain bad? I think there's a difference. Like the original Dawn of the Dead. That was a great film, but it didn't scare me at all. The Grudge spooked me a little, but it was still shitty.

I absolutely love The Ring. When it came out I saw it four times, and I actually have two friends who vowed to never see it again and haven 't. I think two great horror films, if you want to call them that, have been The Orphanage and Pan's Labyrinth. They aren't horror films in the typical sense, but something about them is so eerie.
