True Blood Returns

Season Premiere Review

Jun. 21, 2009 - by Stephanie Poquette – buzz Writer

Sookie and the gang—including vampire Bill with an unexplained, slightly more modern hair-do—opened the season with what else, a murder. In case you missed any of the last season, Sookie, played by Anna Paquin, is the main character of this vampire comedy-drama. After season one delivered a series of murders, a continuing love affair between Sookie and one of the town’s peaceful vampires, Bill (Stephen Moyer), shape-shifters and one brother who just can’t keep his pants zipped, all True Blood fans were waiting for season two with high hopes. And you better believe that the season opener did not disappoint.

After Lafayette’s (Nelsan Ellis) mysterious disappearance at the end of season one, many were left to speculate if dead pink toe-nailed foot hanging out of the detective’s car belonged to everyone’s favorite gay cook. You can sleep easy knowing Lafayette is alive but not really doing too well. He seems to be trapped in Eric’s basement, the vampire leader for this area. Could Eric think that Lafayette had something to do with the vampire Sookie’s brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten), and his girlfriend killed? Whatever the reason for his for being held captive, many viewers can’t wait for one of their favorite characters to get out, or to find out what Eric is planning this time.

But Lafayette isn’t the only character who finds himself in a compromising situation. After being approached by a representative of the Fellowship of the Sun while in jail, Jason believes that God saved him from a horrendous murder trial. There’s just one problem: the Fellowship of the Sun despises vamps, which could be an issue when his sister is dating one. We all knew Jason had it in him to make even his religious choices seem stupid. Expect a lot of issues to come from Jason’s recent decision. He is already going around town preaching the religion’s misguided views, and it will only be a matter of episodes before something big is going to happen between him and vampire Bill.

Everyone’s favorite smart-talking waitress is back as well. Tara (Rutina Wesley) continues to live with the strange yet enchanting Maryann (Michelle Forbes). This week the viewer learned that Maryann and Sam (Sam Trammell) have some what of a history together. The mysterious Maryann and Tara’s budding relationship with another man, also seems to be slowly eating away at Sam. While Maryann continues to show her devotion to large pigs with multiple statues around the house, and does her little shaking statue thing herself, many viewers are really puzzled as to what she could be. If the writers are nice they will tell us soon because seeing her shake or talk to that giant pig one more time without explaining why she can’t live without a farm animal, and many will be annoyed.

But don’t forget the customary True Blood murder that opened the season. The victim is none other than the exorcist doctor, Miss Jeanette. After Sookie killed Rene, the vampire hating serial killer, last season, most of us thought that we would have a break from death for a little while. Sookie is clearly upset by seeing her third murder within such as short time, and seeks comfort in Bill. The only problem is Bill has a house guest—the young girl he had to turn last season as ordered by the vampire leader of the town. Sookie is upset because Bill lied to her about this and other things, but don’t worry, the couple kisses and makes up in the end.

Sookie and vampire Bill seem to be OK for the time-being, but in True Blood fashion this viewer has a feeling something big is about to happen to the couple. Whether it’s more hidden secrets between the two, Sookie’s sun-worshiping brother, or the fact that Lafayette is tied up by a vampire leader in a basement, this season promises to be fun.
