Literature is a bit kinder to motherhood, but not by much. Remember: romantics love moms.

Top 5 Moms in Literature

  1. Praskovya Golovina, Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilych": Waits for her husband to die. Gets bored. Perfunctory motherhood.
  2. Mrs. Bennet, Austen's "Pride and Prejudice": Really really really really really really really wants her daughters to get married.
  3. Anna Karenina, Tolsoy's "Anna Karenina": Falls in love with another man. Wracked by hormones. The thoroughly modern woman, and one of the greatest characters ever.
  4. Margaret "Marmee" March: Charitable and takes care to raise her kids. A lot like my mom!
  5. Grendel's Mother: Brings the ruckus to the Great Hero. Has an incredibly weird kid. Played by Tomb Raider in the movie.
