Desperate Housewives came out of a mid-series slump last season with the introduction of Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delaney) to Wisteria Lane, and this season has proven to be just as thrilling through the use of time succession. Season five takes place five years after the end of season four, giving the women of Wisteria Lane new creative outlets to explore and exciting new narratives to expand upon. This Sunday’s episode, entitled “There’s Always a Woman” brought forth many story lines that are just beginning to prove extremely exciting. Let’s check in with the wives.
Susan: After rejecting boyfriend Jackson’s idea of taking their relationship further, Susan has a change of heart and decides to surprise him at his apartment. She gets much more than she bargained for, however, when she finds another woman in his shower. Explaining that he simply wanted to get over Susan because she broke his heart, Jackson apologizes for the presence of his lady friend and he and Susan decide to start things over.
Bree: Saddened by Katherine’s proposal to move to Maryland due to loneliness on Wisteria Lane, Bree decides to set Katherine up with one of Orson’s college roommates. To her dismay, Bree finds out that the man she has set Katherine up with is actually an ex-convict convicted of organ trafficking. Bree comes clean to Katherine (after Katherine has sex with the man, of course), and Katherine is crushed that her one new romantic hope in two years sells organs illegally on the black market. Bree then tells Katherine not to move to Maryland because Katherine is like a sister to her, and Katherine agrees to stay.
Lynette: After seeing Tom flirting with his Realtor, Lynette becomes suspicious. She investigates, and paranoia sets in. When Tom claims that he is staying late to practice with his band, Lynette catches him in a lie, and later follows him to his band’s practice space, where she sees the Realtor leaving. Lynette packs her bags, convinced that Tom is having an affair, and prepares to leave him. What she doesn’t know, however, is that it is actually her son who is sleeping with the Realtor, and she is three times his age. Tom knows about his son’s sexual activity, but not the actual identity of the woman in question.
Gabby: Carlos accidentally gives a woman an orgasm while massaging her, and the woman tips him $300, then offering for Carlos to accompany her on a trip to Europe as her personal masseuse (at $50,000 each month for two months). Gabby finds out about the “big O” and confronts Carlos’ client. The woman (who is simply very lonely, as she explains) then offers to take Gabby to Europe with her and Carlos, make Gabby her personal shopper, and pay Gabby in clothes. Of course, Gabby can’t refuse.
The most interesting storyline of the season, however, deals with Edie Britt’s new husband, Dave. Dave has insisted that the couple move back to Wisteria Lane, for dark reasons not explained yet, and neighbor Karen McCluskey becomes suspicious. The battle between Dave and Karen intensified in this past episode, as Dave’s actions lead to Karen being hospitalized for dementia. Karen calls upon her tough as nails sister (the fantastic Lily Tomlin) and the two begin an investigation into the mysterious background of Dave. It’ll be exciting to see where this storyline goes.
This season of Desperate Housewives has been as thrilling as ever, and the five-years-in-the-future thing has been both interesting and stimulating as plot lines aren’t going where one would typically expect. Bring on sweeps week!
