Apple released its third iteration of the iPhone earlier this month at their annual June keynote in the form of the iPhone 3GS. According to Apple, the "S" is for "speed".

The 3GS offers a wealth of new hardware and software features atop the already capable iPhone platform. Hardware updates are manifest in the 3 megapixel camera (up from 2 in the first generation and 3G) with new autofocus and video recording, larger capacity (up to 32GB), increased battery life and stronger 3G connectivity.

Software updates unique to the operating system of the 3GS include a video editing program, voice control and dialing. Updates and improvements to the entire iPhone include the long-awaited inclusion of multimedia messaging, which the iPhone was previously incapable of receiving. Other minor changes include the ability to cut, copy, and paste as well as a landscaping keyboard.

The biggest talking point about this line of updates though is the enormous price drop in the line. Instead of discontinuing the 3G in favor of exclusively offering the 3GS, Apple is offering the 8GB model of the 3G at the iPhone’s lowest price point yet, $99. The 16GB model of the 3GS is priced at $199 and the 32GB is going at $299.

With this drop in price, Apple is working to actively compete in the increasingly competitive smartphone market, though it is still only available through an AT&T service plan.

The 3G is available and shipping now, the 3GS will be available June 19.
