Myth debunkers

The mystery of dorm recycling

Nov. 15, 2007 - by Jamie Rudman – Buzz writer

If you live in an apartment in Champaign it is difficult to find a way to recycle all of the beer cans you and your friends used to make a beer pyramid last weekend. Unlike Urbana, Champaign does not offer curbside recycling service for complexes with more than four units, Greek houses or private housing. The University of Illinois, however, does recycle a variety of items including paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic. Timothy Hoss, coordinator of campus waste management, estimates that the University collects between 8,000 to 10,000 pounds of recycling a week. “We bring everything directly to the U of I Waste Transfer Station and then ship everything to the mill,” Hoss said.

Hoss also noted that they use between 10 to 15 semi-trailers a week to transport all of the recycling and mentioned that the University is always looking for new ways to promote recycling around campus.
