On Sunday, May 3, Exile On Main Street will celebrate the release of the latest album from Bob Dylan, Together Through Life with a Dylan Cover Fest from 12 – 5 p.m. With the promise of notable locals honoring the illustrious Dylan, buzz chatted with participant Jonathon Childers about the event, and his current plans.

On the topic of the art of the cover, Childers was realistic, “I like doing covers, but whenever I do a cover…I’m not somebody that tries to make it sound exactly like the song. I spend a lot of time learning the song on my own so that I can make it work with my voice.”

Like many, Dylan was one of the first artists Childers learned to play on the guitar. “I always knew I liked acoustic [music], but I didn’t really know the word for it until late,” he explained.

Organized by University student Carlye Wisel, the Cover Fest is also a subtle nod to the unarguable influence of Dylan on all forms of music.

“[I’m] excited to hear people play things they normally wouldn’t. The day covers a pretty good range of his career. People are playing some stuff you typically wouldn’t hear,” Childers said.

A rising success in his own right, Childers can also be heard at Caffe Paradiso on Friday, May 1. Unlike past shows, Jon will be joined by a band; something he hopes to expand upon this summer.

“I’m going to try to keep up the band thing as long as the neighbors don’t get too mad. We got our first noise warning last night practicing [for the Paradiso show], so I had to walk around and knock on the neighbors’ doors and apologize,” he shared.

You can catch Jon (and raucous crew) on Friday, May 1 at Caffe Paradiso with touring acts Native, Birth Rites and Harps of Tartarus. The show starts at 6 p.m. with Childers' expected to play around 8 p.m.
