Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty Preview
1:00 am Jul 25 - by Basil Aruin – buzz Writer
Full Disclosure: I received a beta invite only during the last weekend of the beta because I was both too cheap and too proud to pre-order it from those soul-stealing monsters over at Gamestop.
More of the same is oftentimes used as an expression of a stale franchise, one that retreads ground instead of innovating. Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is indeed more of the same, but most assuredly it is not growing stale.
Following up their colossally popular initial installment, Blizzard is set to finally release the game that fans of the genre have been salivating over for 12 years. The format remains the same with three playable races each with it's own style, strengths and weaknesses. New units are available that allow for gameplay that is both more fluid and variable.
Graphically, there literally is absolutely no comparison between the original and the sequel. The units are beautifully rendered and the animations all just look "right," exactly as they were pictured in every gamer's mind as they sat digging their fingernails into their faces with anticipation.
In reality, these things don't really matter too much because this is Starcraft, and Starcraft can do no wrong. The balance is perfect, the story seems great, the multiplayer is seamless with ladder divisions and rankings built right in.
The final product, having been wrought in the fiery workshops at Blizzard HQ, is a gleaming thing, something that feels like putting on a favorite old pair of jeans. Except these jeans happen to be from the future... and they are made out of metal. In any case, Starcaft II looks to be exactly the sequel the first game deserved. It releases on July 27 and will cost $59.99.
