Movie Trailer
Space: The Final Frontier
Star Trek XI

Around the globe nerds and fan boys alike emerge from their parents’ basements in search of the holy grail of geekdom. After bitching about pop-movies hidden behind super-lame aliases (yeah you, Skywalkerfan23) they’ll be seizing cinemas over the coming weeks to view (and later lambaste) wunderkind J.J. Abrams’ teaser trailer for his upcoming Star Trek reboot. And that means one thing: Trekkies unite!
But is it worth the hype? The uber creator of TV’s Lost and the latest helmer of the Mission Impossible series has the chops to pull it off. I’m no Trekkie, but I have to admit it looks like Abrams has spun his magic once more into revamping a dormant franchise.
Crossing footage of a tinkering welder with Neal Armstrong and JFK’s oft-quoted space maxims against a black screen doesn’t do the trick until the music kicks in. It’s a chilling experience on par with hearing “Pomp and Circumstance” at a high school graduation or Kelis’ “Milkshake” at your first strip joint.
Then we pull back to admire the welder’s work. Turns out he’s part of a crew. Together they’re putting the finishing touches on the USS Enterprise. And it’s an awe-inspiring vista (even for non-Trekkies). That is until the epic score reaches its familiar crescendo and the Star fleet emblem materializes, sans title.
As it fades into the surrounding vastness of space, I’m left with two thoughts: first, I know far too much about Star Trek – which frightens me; and second, Abrams and Co. might be on to something here. Then a title bearing the advisory, “Under Construction” appears and I smile a little bit.
Clever. Very clever, I must admit. So much so that I stood and applauded (much to the displeasure of the couple seated next to me). Even worth the price of the ticket for Cloverfield (to which the teaser is attached). Yes, I think it’s about time we get excited about Star Trek again.

What cast will this movie have? It is new actors playing the old characters like Captain Kirk and Spock? Or it it the cast from the recent "Star Trek: Enterprise" show that had Scott Bakula in it?
