Sorted scenes with Couples Counseling Killed Katie

A comedic catharsis

Couples Counseling Killed Katie runs July 16-20 at the Station Theatre, Urbana, at 8 P.M. Call 217-384-4000 for reservations.

Couples Counseling Killed Katie is crude, vile, and hilarious. Mark Roberts’ second and final play of the summer season couldn’t be more different that the bittersweet Where the Great Ones Run, but still displays Roberts’ unique brand of humor.

The play is a series of interlocking vignettes, with all the characters played by Mike Trippiedi and Lindsey Markel. Trippiedi and Markel play everything from a hippie songwriting team to a redneck couple to the sort of celebrity hell-spawn one would expect to see on a VH1 reality show. The quick changes in both character and costume are impressive, as is the sense of comic timing displayed by both actors. Mark Trippiedi’s expressive, almost elastic face and Lindsey Markel’s brightness and energy bring each character to life.

Roberts described Couples Counseling Killed Katie as “a comedic assault” that “still has a tiny bit of heart.” The sketches that make up the show display both of those traits. One sketch manages to be amazingly obscene, but oddly sweet at the same time. The quick turns and references to other vignettes add layers to each piece, and keep the audience wanting more.

The Station Theatre and Mark Roberts are a great combination. Roberts’ comedy — shown in its purest, most energetic form in this show — resonates with the Station’s audience. There’s something absolutely wonderful about sitting in a packed house on a summer night listening to other audience members (many of whom are from a previous generation) laugh at extremely dirty jokes and then break into a chorus of “Que Sera, Sera” during the scene change. Couples Counseling Killed Katie is a great way to spend an evening.
