SIGGRAPH 2007 Electronic Showcase
The Best in Animation Development
3:00 am Nov 8 - by Annette Gonzalez – Buzz writer
Computer animation is gaining speed in the movie industry. You’ve probably seen a Pixar movie by now or can remember the realism of Sandman in Spider-Man 3. This is all thanks to the hard work and research of animation studios and effects houses.
Paul Debevec is a big name in graphics research. His computer graphics and lighting techniques have made their way into films such as Superman Returns, Spider-Man, X-Men and Pirates of the Caribbean. He was also chair of the SIGGRAPH 2007 Computer Animation Festival.
Festival submissions are contributed by hundreds of student animators and professional effects houses in five categories: narrative shorts, time-based arts, visual effects, real-time graphics and scientific visualizations. Several animations are chosen on the basis of the creative innovation of never-before-seen animation.
Debevec will be flying in from California to bring this showcase to his hometown, Urbana, for the SIGGRAPH 2007 Electronic Theater UIUC Showcase. The event will take place at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications auditorium Nov. 8. The films will be displayed in HD using the NCSA’s high-definition projector.
The event is hosted by the NCSA Advanced Visualization Lab, Debevec and the UIUC Student Chapter (still in the works) of ACM SIGGRAPH, a community of artists, designers and programmers dedicated to the production of animated shorts, video games and graphics research.
Animations in the show include pieces from Pixar, Blue Sky (known for Ice Age and Robots), ILM (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sony Imageworks (Spider-Man 3), CaféFX (Pan’s Labyrinth), and several well-known video game companies and graphics researchers.
There is a Facebook event page set up where you can RSVP for the show and can check out a video trailer for the showcase. If enough people RSVP, a second showing will be scheduled earlier in the afternoon. Along with the incredible digital film and video pieces, there will also be free food. The event is free and open to anyone who is interested in seeing some of the best work from the graphics industry.
