Should Maine have repealed the right to same-sex marriage?
4:00 am Nov 12 - by Lauren Hise – buzz Writer
With the passing of Question 1 in Maine this past Election Day, the march towards the legalization of same-sex marriage was forced to take yet another step back. Passing with a thin majority of just over fifty percent, Question 1 repealed legislation that previously allowed same-sex marriage in the state. This defeat comes not far off the heels of California’s passage of Proposition 8, which also changed the state’s constitution to exclude same-sex marriage. While discouraging, those who are supporters of same-sex marriage will no doubt continue their quest for equality despite the setbacks. At the same time, those opposed to the legalization on the belief that marriage should be limited to a man and woman are unlikely to back down in light of their victory. In the midst of such a heated issue, on which side do you stand? Should the right to same-sex marriage have been repealed?

"I think it’s really unfortunate. We have so much potential to be progressive, and we are actively not. It sucks."
— Kaytlin Reedy, senior in Psychology and Gender and Women’s Studies

"It’s surprising that in 2009, we’re still debating the same-sex marriage question. It shouldn’t even be debated. Having the right and taking it away, it’s a slap in the face."
— Elena Alvarado, junior in Media Studies

"It’s really sad that gay people can’t get married. They should have the same rights as everyone else. They are contributing to society. They should get something in return."
— Jessica Alkass, sophomore in Advertising

"I support gay marriage, but I think it’s a complicated because of separation of church and state. Churches should have a right to choose whom they marry. State should support it. It’s hard to see the opponent’s side because it is not taking anything away from people who believe in marriage only between men and women."
— Douglas Brizgys, senior in Political Science

"They should have the right to marry. My brother is gay, and he should have the same rights and freedoms as everyone else"
— Brian Schoby, University of Illinois alumnus and CU resident
