I’m going to fire some titles across your bow and see what sticks.

New Avengers #39
(Marvel)

Right now, Marvel is gearing up for its next big crossover — Secret Invasion, which concerns a race of shape-changing aliens called Skrulls infiltrating the superhuman community. Both Avengers titles, New and Mighty, are written by Brian Michael Bendis, and what happens in these series leads the course of events for every other Marvel title. New Avengers is the team currently fugitive from the law after refusing to register. It features Dr. Strange and Spider-Man, as well as the female ninja, Echo. Though she is deaf, she is like Daredevil in that all her other senses are preternaturally heightened. She can memorize the muscle movements of everyone she sees, so she can replicate any fighting style (she was created before Heroes). This issue is also special because writer/illustrator David Mack provided art. Mack also created Echo. “I would never have imagined when I created Echo that she would be fighting Skrulls,” said Mack. Both New Avengers #39 and Mighty Avengers #10 are to be released next Wednesday.

Gargoyles
(Slave Labor Graphics)

Picking up where the Disney animated series left off, the series is written by Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman. This series deals primarily with the implications of the Gargoyles’ existence being revealed to the public. Detective Elisa Maza, Xanatos, Fox, Talon and other allies and villains return but not in a big splash — they are reintroduced as the plot permits it, tastefully done. I liked the more adult feel of the series, such as the acknowledgement of a romantic relationship between Goliath and Elisa. Of course, the biggest detriment would have to come not from the comics but from the DVDs — only the first season and half of the second season are released on DVD, and due to poor sales, it’s likely to stay that way. The series does a good job of not relying heavily on the later episodes, but there is a big chunk of story we are missing, and these comics are meant to fit into those. Regardless, if you watched the show as a kid, I recommend this book. The first six issues are collected in Gargoyles: Clan Building Volume One.

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash
(Wildstorm/Dynamite)

If you enjoyed the Evil Dead trilogy, featuring Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his chainsaw hand, read the comics based on the films. Ash has been facing some heavy hitters such as Dracula and zombified versions of Marvel superheroes. His next stop on his pop culture world tour is Camp Crystal Lake where he is attacked by Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th and Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Ash’s next team-up was just announced to be Xena: Warrior Princess!
