He is the only person on Earth who can honestly say they tapped their way down Sesame Street and taught a penguin how to become a true hoofer. He is Savion Glover and he is performing at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday night.
At 33, Glover has become a tap legend, with a command of percussion unseen through a few wild taps of his feet — a true feat. He feels the music from the tips of his dreadlocks all the way down to his Capezio’s and lets it out onstage with passion and energy.
Glover first showed interest in music at age four when he began taking drum lessons. He was too advanced for the class so he continued on to tap. Glover excelled in tap and eventually caught the attention of the choreographer for the Broadway Musical The Tap Dance Kid. More musical roles and movie roles followed, and along the way he picked up a few tips after working with the great Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. Glover calls his style “free-form hard core” and it is well-recognized. He choreographed and starred in Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk, which won four Tonys. The hoofer spent five years on Sesame Street with Big Bird and the gang, and helped a little penguin named Mumble get a little street cred among his fellow penguins. Glover prepared a few motion-capture performances to get the dance sequences you see in Happy Feet. The performer/choreographer/tap genius will be gracing us with his presence Tuesday along with a Jazz combo at Krannert. Get ready for an incredible show.
