David Mirkin’s 1997 comedy has become a cult hit since its theatrical release in 1997, as it has found a wide audience through video and its consistent appearances on cable. The film, about best friends Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michelle (Lisa Kudrow) as they strive to make names for themselves at their ten year high school reunion, is fun, fun, fun. However, one scene stands out over the rest, and has become a pop culture staple over the years.

After telling off the class bitch (Julia Campbell), it seems as though the reunion cannot get better for the two blonde heroines. However, class nerd Sandy Frink (Alan Cumming) soon enters the reunion, complete with better looks and a boatload of money, and asks Michelle to dance. “Only if Romy can dance with us,” she responds, setting up the framework for one of the most hilarious dance sequences ever captured on film.

Cue Cindy Lauper’s “Time After Time.” The three hit the dance floor and dance their asses off as the entire reunion watches. However, the dance is a perfectly choreographed piece of work that could only be described as modern dance meets the 1980s meets The Twilight Zone. The three characters roll around on the ground, run around in circles, and play off of each other with perfect comic timing, presenting a moment that is not only triumphant and sweet but also absolutely hilarious. The dance ends with uproarious applause as Romy, Michelle, and Sandy leave the reunion…in his helicopter. The scene is a pitch-perfect way to end a film that prides itself on being unapologetically silly.

This writer has a confession to make: Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion is like, totally my favorite movie of all time. And this scene showcases the film at its best.
