Rock and roll will save the world

In a society that functions so heavily on political decisions and the intricacies of economics, it becomes difficult to defend the cruciality of art in our contemporary world. To most people, art, and particularly music, is undoubtedly meaningful, but its importance cannot be substantiated.
Though it is an immutable aspect of culture, music has little consequence on the prosperity of a society. The outcome of a musician’s brilliant piece of work simply cannot compare to the results of decisions made on Wall Street or in Washington. Its influence is more personal and less pressing. Music speaks to your soul, not to your pocketbook.
While music’s legitimacy in today’s society can be endlessly argued, it’s definitely here to stay. Despite its lack of direct influence on world events, mankind has repeatedly expressed his passion for artistic sound. However, it is incredibly uplifting to see the way in which music can actually transform from an elusive art form to become an influential factor in world events.
In light of the recent series of devastating earthquakes, especially the Haiti earthquake, a huge wave of compassion has reverberated throughout the music community. Musicians of every kind have come together to put their talent into action. From every genre, every level of fame and all parts of the globe, musicians have been able to prove the worthiness of their passions. Both the global music community as well as the much more intimate Champaign-Urbana music scene have willingly worked to transform musical art into monetary relief.
In our own community, several efforts were put forth to raise awareness as well as funds for relief of the Haiti earthquake. Some were sponsored by restaurants and coffee shops, such as the benefit show held at Caffe Paradiso a few weeks ago. Others are being held by larger businesses and corporations. Others still have been hosted by local students who have gathered friends that share a love for music and a sincere compassion for humanity.
While these benefit shows, especially the latter, will not resolve a multi-billion dollar crisis, their results are honorable and demonstrate importance of music in the livelihood of a community.
Though music does not solve world problems per se, its message perpetually reverberates throughout the world. It is something beautiful that can help dull and assuage the perverse ugliness in the world. And in many incredible cases, it too can provide substantial monetary relief funds for the victims of crises.
