Wall-E

Since its humble beginnings with their first feature film Toy Story, Pixar Animation Studios has made a name for itself by giving voices to generally silent objects and creatures. Whether it be toys, fish, cars or rats, Pixar's movies have always relied on adorable stories mixed with well written dialogue that caters to both kids and adults. With their latest film Wall-E, Pixar has gone in a different direction and has created a film with almost no dialogue in it at all. This may rub some people the wrong way, but let me tell you, it works…it works extremely well.
The story revolves around Wall-E, the freakishly cute robot who is left alone on Earth to clean up all of the trash and pollution that humanity has left behind. Wall-E spends his days turning garbage into cubes, collecting knick-knacks and watching Hello, Dolly! on VHS tape. Wall-E appears to be living a sweet little robot life but the musical makes him realize that he is actually quite lonely. This all changes when a space ship lands on Earth and releases a female robot named EVE whose main directive is to search for vegetation on Earth. Wall-E looks into her digital eyes and sees the robot of his dreams. The rest of the film plays out to be one of the most romantic movies ever made, which is saying a lot for an animated film that is about robots.
As always, Pixar is on top of its game when it comes to the visual style of the film. The film looks incredible and everything is extremely detailed. A scene in which Wall-E traverses through space is nothing short of breathtaking. Pixar took a risk by ditching conventional dialogue and using more of a visual form of story telling, and it definitely paid off. The story really couldn't (and shouldn't) have been told any other way.
I could spend days praising this movie. It is truly a work of art and is an easy contender for Best Animated Film. Pixar has pulled out all of the stops and made a film that is going to be extremely difficult to top, but anything seems possible when it comes to the imagination and genius found at Pixar. Go see this movie!
