buzz:How did Red Knife Lottery begin?
Dan Yingling: I came in late [to the band] — around two years ago. I have heard rumors that Chris [Hansen] and Joe [Kanack] started Red Knife Lottery as a Metallica cover band in high school, but I'm not sure I believe it.
buzz: Red Knife Lottery has a substantially genre-eclipsing sound. Do you find that your audience and tourmates capture the number of different influences that shine through on the album, from punk to an almost dance-rock feel?
Dan Yingling: I hope so. We have absolutely no interest in being a "band of the moment." There is so much of that going on that it has gotten to the point where I will be talking to bands at shows and instead of talking about the music, they will start talking to me about how much so and so "draw." It's completely out of hand. We do what we have always done, what I have always done in any band I have played in — which is write songs that sound good to us, songs that sound creative and get us excited about being a band.
buzz: How has the response to Soiled Soul and Rapture been? Are you happy with the end result?
Dan Yingling: So far, everything has been pretty positive. People seem to like the record. It's definitely a little different than the first EP that was released 4 or 5 years ago, but there are two new members in the band, and we have all grown since then as musicians. We have to try new things always or we will lose our minds as artists. Comparisons to that first record are expected and welcome. Criticism is always good.
buzz: Is this your first time playing in Champaign? How did you become a part of the show for Altered Ego Tattoo's 7th Anniversary concert?
Dan Yingling: This is our first time playing here. Our friend Jake Hicks called us and asked us to play the show. I was living with James (Munoz of The Bled) at the time, and Jake also contacted him. It worked out that [The Bled] were at the end of their current tour right around the time of this show, so we both agreed to play. I am pretty excited about it — should be a party.
buzz: What expectations do you have for the performance?
Dan Yingling: I am excited. This is going to be an awesome night. I am excited to hang out and play with our friends. I am excited to play any show, but when you get to do something like this it always means a little more.
buzz: What's next after the Champaign show? Are there any major touring plans, or future recordings in the works?
Dan Yingling: The dates on our Myspace page are the beginning of a mid-west to east coast tour that we are working on for November. We are definitely ready to get on the road and play as many cities as possible. As far as recording plans, we are shooting to get back into the studio sometime next spring. The new album came out early September, but it was recorded a year ago this month. It took forever to come out and we definitely don't want to go another 4 years before putting out more material. We have been writing over the past year and are all excited about the direction the band is headed.
Don't miss Red Knife Lottery at Altered Ego Tattoo's 7th Anniversary show at The Highdive on Sunday, October 4 with Take Care, Roberta Sparrow and The Bled.
